ART DECO
was a popular international design movement between the two great wars of the 20th century. It's popularity peaked during
the roaring twenties. At the time the style was seen as elegant, functional and ultra-modern, breathing life into a
period of worldwide financial depression. Although the term Art Deco did not enter the English vocabulary
until the 1960's when the style had a resurgence, it derived from the PARIS
EXPOSITION INTERNATIONALE DES ARTS DECORATIFS
in 1925.

The Victorian appetite for flamboyance and eager display of wealth, made it's mark on everything
from architecture and furnishings, to tableware and ornaments. A vast pottery industry rose to fuel the need, with factories
such as Minton producing for both table use and decoration. Minton
Majolica Ware was decorative
to the point of bizarre if not grotesque. The Victorian love affair with this style encouraged other potteries such
as George Jones and Joseph Holdcroft, both former
employees at Minton
Middlesbrough was home to the LINTHORPE POTTERY, one of the most innovative and interesting potteries of the Victorian era. In
it's short life over 2000 different shapes were produced by it's chief designer CHRISTOPHER
DRESSER. Sadly the production records and stock were dispersed by auction
when the factory closed. Several of his designs continued to be produced even after his association with the pottery
ended in 1882, and numerous pieces can be found without his facsimile signature.
