The Industrial Revolution brought a mass migration of agricultural labour to the towns
and cities. Improved pay and conditions through progressive reforms offered better prospects in the cotton mills,
coal mines, potteries and iron foundries. Britain's empire brought food from abroad, and the railway system made transportation
of goods much faster.

Despite a glut of wealth and ingenuity, the Victorians lacked identity. Looking
to the tried and tested they went about a revival of old styles, from Classical to Gothic, Elizabethan, Jacobean and Queen
Anne. Although these previous styles had their turn of being revived, the Victorian architects were happy to add their
own embelishments, making them easily distinguishable from the original. Victorian architecture can be seen in
profusion throughout the English speaking nations.

The latter part of the 19th century was an era of "cover up", where every surface in
the middle class drawing room or parlour was crammed with clutter. Bareness and lack of ornamentation was
considered in poor taste. In contrast the William Morris style reverted to the pre industrial age, fulfilling a
growing nostalgia for simple rural trappings, with a strong resurgence in oak furniture. Minimalism through choice
rather than austerity is a recurring trend.
