As our most plentiful native wood, oak was used for constructing furniture in
the early Georgian period. It was simple, hand crafted but extremely well constructed. It's simplicity was
influenced by the earlier puritan period when anything decorative was frowned upon. It was ideal for country living.
With the present restoration of rural property, this kind of furniture when it can be found is finding it's way back home.

Anyone going abroad on holiday for the first time will no doubt have been struck by differing
styles, and perhaps introduced new ideas in their home on returning. With the expansion of the empire,
new ideas and more exotic woods were introduced from South America and the East. The opportunities offered to great
craftsmen such as Adams, Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheraton now provide us with a fine legacy of Georgian
furniture.

A great deal of 18th and 19th century furniture was designed by men who by profession
were highly esteemed architects. It is thought that Robert Adam had much of his furniture made at Gillows in Lancaster. In
comparison to modern day household furniture they actually left us with works of art.
